Homemade Remedies For That Annoying Cough!

By Lourdes Santos May 30, 2017

Everyone knows how annoying it is when someone nearby can't stop coughing. Don't be that person; Try these all-natural remedies for soothing an irritated throat and suppressing a chronic cough!

Coughing is usually your body's response to inflammation in the throat, lungs, and respiratory tract, irritants in the air, or post-nasal drip. It can also be caused by a viral or bacterial infection.

While over-the-counter cough syrups and drops can be effective, they often contain harsh chemicals, additives, and artificial dyes and flavoring - none of which are beneficial to your health and immune system when you're already sick! Skip out on the unhealthy stuff by making your own cough remedy using all-natural ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry!

A Spoonful Of Honey

Taking a spoonful of honey is a great solution when your cough starts acting up. Honey is a strong antioxidant that not only aids in immune function, but contains strong anti-inflammatory properties that can calm an inflamed, sore throat. Studies have found that honey is actually one of the best natural cough suppressants - In fact, a 2007 study by Penn State University found that honey is more effective in cough relief than dextromethorphan, a common ingredient in many over-the-counter cough syrups.

Pineapple Juice

Pineapple is rich in an enzyme known as bromelain. This specific enzyme has strong anti-inflammatory properties that can help bring down painful inflammation in the throat. It may also reduce post-nasal drip - the annoying mucus that lingers in the back of the throat - which contributes to a person's need to constantly cough. Next time you can't seem to stop coughing, juice a pineapple and see for yourself! It is suggested that you drink around 3 ounces, 3 times per day while your cough persists.

When mixed with hot water or added to tea, lemon can help to loosen congestion. While there isn't too much supporting evidence, many people attest that the acidic properties of lemon have the ability to cut through mucus and reduce the amount of phlegm in the throat. Lemon also has antibacterial properties which can kill bacteria in the throat that might otherwise cause infection and make your cough even worse.

Peppermint Tea

The invigorating aroma of peppermint tea can certainly liven you up when you're feeling sick, but what's even better is its ability to act as a decongestant! Peppermint contains menthol, which is an organic compound that offers a cooling sensation that may relieve a sore throat and loosen up mucus.

If you own an herb garden, try picking some thyme leaves and crushing them into tea. Thyme leaves contain organic plant compounds known as flavonoids, which may reduce your cough by relaxing the muscles in your throat. The soothing scent of thyme has also been shown to relieve coughing associated with bronchitis.

Salt Water Gargle

Adding a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and using it as a gargling solution can not only cleanse the throat, but can also pull fluid out of swollen tissues within the throat, reducing inflammation. The act of gargling may also break up mucus in the throat, and salt has the ability to kill some of the germs that may be making you sick in the first place!
